Bangkok electricity bills: what to ask before signing

Air-conditioning can move a Bangkok budget more than most small daily savings. Before signing, ask whether the account is billed directly by the Metropolitan Electricity Authority or whether the landlord applies a private per-unit rate. Request a sample recent bill for a comparable occupied room and photograph your meter at move-in. Compare units used, not only the final baht total. Room size, top-floor heat, afternoon sun, air-conditioner age and thermostat habits all matter. Check that the unit cools properly during the viewing and clean filters regularly. Curtains, shade and a fan can reduce the hours of compressor use without making the room uncomfortable. Do not rely on a social-media claim that there is one universal “government rate.” Electricity structures and adjustment charges change. Use the current MEA tariff information and your actual meter data. If a landlord charges a separate rate, require it in writing before paying the deposit.
